“Julie
Cohn’s music is a feast for the eyes and ears. She
effortlessly blends
her training in the fine arts and jazz with strong influences
such as Joni
Mitchell, black spirituals, Pat Metheny and Basia. When
Julie performs
it’s like watching a portrait come alive – you
will be deeply moved
by the emotional and harmonic colors she paints.”
- Neal Cronin, Bay Area Performer
“Julie puts her own original
takes on standards combined with her beautiful voice, creative
improvisations and captivating original lyrics!.”
- Daria, jazz vocalist
Julie has been singing for audiences since
the age of 10. As an adult, her favorite area is jazz. She
writes many of her own compositions and lyrics and is continually
inspired by jazz standards in the areas of swing, bebop,
blues, ballads, and tunes with Brazilian and Cuban jazz
rhythms. Julie often sings with fabulous accompanists who
live in the Bay Area. After many years of not playing guitar,
due to a hand injury, she is playing jazz guitar again and
will hopefully be ready to sing with her guitar this year.
"There is a change of spirit within me as soon as I
sing or play my guitar. All at once, both a calming feeling
and a mounting energy coalesce. Feelings come to the surface:
sad, elated, exuberant, wistful, ambivalent, yearning, curious,
passionate, and soulful. I have learned so much about expressing
feelings though singing and playing guitar. As I develop
techniques in both areas, my feelings about life shine through
more easily. In a world where we are often taught to keep
our strong feelings in check, music is a vent for those
feelings and is a way to connect with others. I also feel
a special bond with the instrumentalists who accompany me
and the audiences who support us, and that always brings
my joy to a new level."
